Studies have shown that learning to drive is good for your health – but why? Surprisingly, there are numerous reasons.
Firstly – much like home ownership – getting your driving license in the UK is a ‘right of passage’. Everyone does it. The race is on from the moment you turn 17 years old to apply for your provisional license so you can legally get behind the wheel of your parents car (with their permission!) and get learning.
Just the little plastic card alone can be used as proof of ID virtually anywhere that is needed in the UK. Without a license you’d need to use your passport which – if you’re anything like me – will give you great anxiety with you checking every few seconds to make sure you haven’t lost it or left it behind! The cost of replacing the your passport can be several hundreds of pounds for a rush service – not to mention the additional risk of missing and non-refundable flights and holidays (not that this is really a huge issue during the lockdown!)
Secondly – once you pass your test – you’re now able to access unique places that were almost out-of-reach when you had to use public transport. For example, your gym, local park and supermarket. We all know what it’s like trying to carry one shopping bag on each finger for a long time – because you got carried away buying all of that ice-cream!
Lastly – and by no means least – it’s a status symbol. Yes, you heard that right. You get to flash your shiny driving license to all of your friends with pride. You’re the one that can rent a car on holiday. You’re the one that can rescue your parents in an emergency if they find themselves unable to drive.
The only snag? Actually passing your test can take significant time. The average waiting list to take your driving test is an eye watering twelve weeks – but don’t despair – there are ways to get an earlier driving test – such as with DrivingScout. DrivingScout will search high and low to ensure you snap up any cancelled driving test appointments ASAP so you can get your license.
